A Message from ISCST President

Welcome to the web site of the International Society of Coating Science and Technology (ISCST). The ISCST is a technical society formed by an international group of academic and industrial scientists and engineers that fosters fundamental understanding of liquid-applied coating processes. The ISCST serves as an interface between scholarly research and industrial practice: both are welcome, but it is the interplay between the two that makes the ISCST unique. Approximately two-thirds of current ISCST members are from industry, with the remainder coming from other places such as academia and national laboratories.
The ISCST organizes the biennial International Coating Science and Technology Symposium, the world’s premier forum for presenting advances in the mechanisms and process technology needed for applying wet coated layers. Information about previous Symposia, including extended abstracts, can be found at this web site. In 2022, we had a successful in-person symposium event that took place in Minneapolis, MN, and we’re currently planning the next 2024 symposium to be held in Atlanta, GA during the month of September. The ISCST collaborates with the coating communities in Europe and Asia and co-sponsors the European Coating Symposium and the Japan Coating Symposium.
The most recent symposia have shown a dramatic shift in the topics being presented: from emphasis on coating and drying processes of traditional high-capacity coating industries, to emerging applications such as photovoltaics, fuel and battery cells, all sorts of biomedical applications, electronic displays, and flexible electronic devices, that bring with them many new and exciting challenges and opportunities. The ISCST Symposium has become a great place to learn of new findings and approaches that will allow attendees to return to their workplace with new ideas for their own coating problems. The highly interactive format of our symposia helps to foster new collaborations between those working on similar or even seemingly very different coating applications.
The ISCST traditionally offers a continuing education program immediately preceding its Symposium. We focus on key areas of the trade. Our 2020 edition “Industrial Web Drying – Fundamentals and Practice”, and our 2018 edition “Liquid Films Coating Science and Technology”, both received rave reviews. The ISCST also sponsors the John A. Tallmadge Award for outstanding contributions to coating technology, the L. E. Scriven Young Investigator Award, and the Best Student Poster Award.
The ISCST is always seeking new ways to serve the coating community at large – our existing membership and partners as well as potential new members and partners. Please contact me if you have any thoughts on how the ISCST can better serve the coating community.

The Purpose and Goals of ISCST
The International Society of Coating Science and Technology (ISCST) is a technical society that was formed in December of 1996 by an international group of academic and industrial engineers who believed that the global coating technical community would benefit by having its own society. The specific purposes of ISCST are to:
- Provide forums for presenting advances in the mechanisms and technologies used in the preparation, application, solidification, and micro-structure of coated films.
- Encourage technology transfer, professional development, and networking of scientists engaged in the coating process sciences.
- Provide continuing educational programs in coating process science and technology.
- Provide opportunities to leverage technologies among diverse coating industries.
