Prof. Wilhelm Schabel heads a research group Thin Film Technology at KIT with Coating & Printing laboratories at KIT Campus South and KIT Campus North. He studied process engineer, his doctor thesis (summa cum laude) in the field of film drying was honored with the Carl-Freudenberg Award in 2006. He gained industrial experiences in coating technology as R&D engineer at LOFO High Tech Film/Basel in 2007-2008. In 2009 he was appointed as Professor at KIT. He received the Arnold Eucken Award from VDI-GVC (Chemical Engineering) in 2007 and the L.E. Scriven Award in 2008 from the ISCST (International Society of Coating Science and Technology).

Prof. Schabel was honored in 2012 with a Dr. h.c. for his research achievements by the Technical University of IASI and in 2015 with the Innovation NEULAND Award. He is active in the international ISCST and ECS committees as past chairman, director, vice president. He is author and co-author of more than 90 publications and has presented more than 500 national and international conference contributions together with the TFT group in the field of coating and drying of thin films.
