Nomination procedure for both ISCST awards: Nominations must include a brief professional history of the nominee and specify how the nominee meets the criteria of the award. To submit a nomination, open and print the Tallmadge Award Nomination form or the Young Investigator Award, (Adobe Acrobat PDF or Microsoft Word format) found below. Complete the form and e-mail it with the necessary attachments.

Presentation: The awards will be presented at the 22nd International Coating Science and Technology Symposium, September 2024, Atlanta, GA, USA


John A. Tallmadge Award for Contributions
to Coating Technology


Description: Recognizes an individual’s significant contributions to the understanding or improvement of the technology of the coating of continuous webs. The award is presented bi-ennially, in even numbered years.

Sponsored by:  International Society of Coating Science and Technology, and AIChE.

Nomination deadline: July 1, 2024

Award: A plaque and $1,000.

Nomination procedure:  Nominations must include a brief professional history of the nominee and specify how the nominee meets the criteria of the award.  To submit a nomination, open and print the Tallmadge Nomination Form (Adobe Acrobat PDF format*), complete the form, and e-mail it with the necessary attachments by TBD.

Presentation: The 2020 winner was Marco Carvalho, Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio de Janeir. The next award will be presented at the 2024 ISCST Symposium.

L.E. Scriven Young Investigator Award


Description: This award is given in recognition of outstanding sustained achievements or one-time breakthroughs in the area of continuous liquid film coating science and technology. Those nominated for this award must be forty years old or younger. The award will be presented at the Symposium.

Award: A plaque and $500.

Nomination procedure: Nominations must include a brief professional history of the nominee and specify how the nominee meets the criteria of the award. To submit a nomination, open and print the Young Investigator Nomination Form  (Adobe Acrobat PDF format*), complete the form, and e-mail it with the necessary attachments by June 30, 2024. The 2022 winner was Dr. Scott Mauger, National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The next award will be given at the 2024 ISCST Symposium.

ISCST Edward D. Cohen Student Travel Awards


Description: These awards are here to help students or recent graduates gain the experience and exposure that comes from attending and presenting at a bi-annual ISCST Symposium. The travel awards are intended to defray some of the costs of their attendance.

Nomination deadline: TBD

Award: Student registration fees and up to three nights hotel accommodations. Students selected for the award who reside less than 25 miles from the conference site will only receive free registration for the conference. Awarded hotel accommodations could be used in double occupancy, to further benefit the awardee’s research group.

Eligibility Criteria: The nominee must be a full-time graduate or postdoctoral student or former graduate student who graduated in the previous year. The student must be the speaker for an oral or poster presentation at the ISCST Symposium. Only one award will be given to any one research group, thus it is ideal to receive only one nominee per group. Students who have received the ISCST Student Travel Award before are not eligible for additional ISCST Student Travel Awards. The number of awardees would be set by the ISCST executive board.

Nomination procedure: Nominations, for eligible students,  must include a letter of recommendation from the academic advisor describing the student achievements, potential and special circumstances. From the student we require: a) A brief statement form the student with the professional contact information, the title of the presentation (specifying oral or poster presentation), the list of co-authors and affiliations. and the rationale for the request consistent with eligibility and selection criteria.
