Professor Christopher L. Wirth to receive the L. E. Scriven Young Investigator Award during the 23rd ISCST Symposium

The International Society for Coating Science and Technology will present the 2026 L. E. Scriven Award to Professor Chris Wirth of Case Western Reserve University.  The award will be presented at the Awards Lunch on September 1, 2026 during the 23rd ISCST Symposium in Minneapolis, MN.  The L. E. Scriven Award is given in recognition of outstanding sustained achievements or one-time breakthroughs in the area of continuous liquid film coating science and technology.

Professor Chris Wirth is recognized for advancing the understanding of drying dynamics, rheology, flow, and defect formation in coatings. Professor Wirth received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. In collaboration with industrial partners, he has pioneered approaches such as Variable Angle Inspection Microscopy and advanced optical imaging methods to help predict and mitigate coating defects, supporting more efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes. His current research explores non-equilibrium dynamics of complex fluids and colloidal particles in crowded environments, with a growing interest in formulation engineering for energy and the manufacturing of coatings and films. Beyond his research contributions, Professor Wirth has demonstrated leadership in academic-industry collaboration, professional society programming, and large-scale initiatives advancing materials and manufacturing innovation.
